2007 America Has as Almost as Many Blacks in Prison as there were Slaves in 1786

According to government statistics there are 1,159,326 non white males in prison. According to statistics at http://academic.udayton.edu there were 1,510,000 slaves imported for the English colonies in America (excluding Jamaica) from 1680-1786. Only angry denial would think that the prison population is better off than the slaves of the era.

From DOJ statistics on December 31, 2005 —

— 2,193,798 prisoners were held in Federal or State prisons or in local jails — an increase of 2.7% from yearend 2004, less than the average annual growth of 3.3% since yearend 1995.
— there were an estimated 491 prison inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents — up from 411 at yearend 1995.

— the number of women under the jurisdiction of State or Federal prison authorities increased 2.6% from yearend 2004, reaching 107,518 and the number of men rose 1.9%, totaling 1,418,406.

At yearend 2005 there were 3,145 black male sentenced prison inmates per 100,000 black males in the United States, compared to 1,244 Hispanic male inmates per 100,000 Hispanic males and 471 white male inmates per 100,000 white males.

From http://www.tpronline.org/

It has been estimated that approximately 1.5 million children have a parent in prison. However, this number misses those youth whose parent is in jail or has recently been released.

Incarceration rates have increased four-fold in the past 30 years, and those who are incarcerated are serving longer sentences (and thus are removed from their families for longer periods of time).

Parental incarceration is not a single event, but a process which begins with criminal activity, progresses through the arrest process, incarceration, and (usually) release. Additionally, incarceration does not signal the beginning of family distress, but usually exacerbates a life that may already be characterized by poverty, stress, and trauma.

Prejudice likely prevents the causes and solutions of this skewed prison population from being discussed. Does prison alienate people? Do the courts convict all on the basis of exaggerated police reports by incompetent police which can only be over-turned by the extremely literate, savvy, sane, and knowledgeable? My personal experience would suggest that the defendant has to be articulate and scientific in order to disprove police lies and distortions in order to prove his innocence. Other posts give proof to this premise.

  1. Guardian says:

Sane people think prison cruel and unusual. Jail should be considered unconstitutional. The sane should not have to live under the edicts of the sociopaths.

  2. Guardian says:

A U.S. Department of Justice Bulletin on Prison and Jail Inmates at Midyear 1999 states the 90.8 percent of the jail population is male. Of that population, 58.2 percent are non-white. This means that if the total prison population is 2,193,798, that the non-white population is 90.8*58.2*2,193,798 or 1,159,326. The number of blacks in jail as quoted in the original blog article is incorrect. There are 1,159,326 non-white males in American jails and prisons, not 1,418,000 as originally quoted. The number has been edited to reflect this.

Nonwhites does not necessarily mean black. It also includes Asians, Hispanics, people of middle eastern decent, ect…
